All About Cheshire CT: Weekly News Brief

Monday, April 20, 2026

Welcome to this week's edition of the Cheshire news roundup. We’re at a crossroads this April as the town balances the weight of a massive school modernization project against the high-energy "Golden Era" of spring athletics and community planning.

🏛️ Town Government & The $157.4 Million Question

The Town Council and Board of Education (BOE) are entering the "home stretch" of budget season. On the table is a proposed $157.4 million budget for FY 2026-2027—a 7.87% increase that has sparked plenty of conversation at the local coffee shops.

The Driver: The primary spike comes from debt service for the $166 million school modernization project, which includes the construction of the new Barnum and Norton elementary schools.

Infrastructure News: In a win for neighborhood preservation, the Town Council recently voted unanimously against a controversial proposal for a cold storage facility off Birch Drive, following a wave of community opposition.

Critical Dates: * Thursday, April 23 @ 6:30 p.m.: General Budget Deliberations (Room 207/209, Town Hall).

Tuesday, April 28 @ 7:00 p.m.: Final Budget Adoption (Council Chambers).

Today’s Home Opener (April 20): Baseball takes on East Haven at 4:15 p.m. at CHS.

Youth Night: Mark your calendars for Friday, April 24 @ 4:45 p.m. as Baseball hosts Sheehan for "Youth Day"—a great chance to bring the future Rams out to the park.

Lacrosse: The Girls Varsity team hosts Lauralton Hall today at 3:00 p.m., while the Boys head to Amity for a 5:00 p.m. face-off.

Public Safety Note: The Cheshire Police Department has issued a "heads up" regarding the seasonal "Senior Assassin" water gun games. While a tradition for the Class of 2026, police urge students to avoid public safety misunderstandings.

Road Patrols: Expect to see increased patrols in residential areas as the department works to address seasonal speeding concerns despite current staffing challenges.
