Pop’s Pizza: A Decades-Old Cheshire
Pop’s is well-regarded for its "old-fashioned" approach to pizza, with a crust that many locals describe as thicker than traditional New Haven style but consistently crispy and cooked to perfection.
- Signature Pizzas: The menu features several standout specialty pies, including the Buffalo Chicken Pizza, which is frequently cited as a favorite. For those looking for something unique, the Mac and Cheese Pizza is a popular choice that is often enjoyed when dipped in marinara.
- Stuffed Breads and Grinders: Beyond pizza, the restaurant is famous for its homemade stuffed breads and meatball parmigiano grinders. Reviewers often highlight the paper-thin sliced meatballs as a highlight of their meatball-topped pies and subs.

Rose Dairy: A Cheshire Classic
Founded in 1951 by James Barbato Sr. and named for his wife Lillian Rose, this iconic walk-up at 906 S Main St is a true family legacy. Though it spent years as a franchise, twin brothers Jim and Joe Barbato reclaimed the name in 2005, celebrating 20 years of family ownership in 2025.
Fast Facts for the 2026 Season
Season: Open mid-March through mid-November.
2026 Kickoff: Reopened Saturday, March 28th after fresh renovations.
The Menu Stars: Charbroiled "Butch" burgers (1/2 lb hand-pressed), Hummel hot dogs, and buttery lobster rolls.
Sweet Treats: Soft-serve, Gifford’s hard-serve, and the famous "Doggie Sundaes."
With its outdoor pavilion and nostalgic service, Rose Dairy remains the town's favorite "warm weather institution" for grabbing a burger and catching up with neighbors.
Blackie's Hot Dog Stand
The star of the show remains the all-beef hot dog, custom-made by Martin Rosol’s Meats in New Britain. Deep-fried for a signature snap and served on a toasted roll, these links are best enjoyed DIY-style with Blackie’s legendary hot pepper relish. The pickle-less topping offers a mild start with a lingering spicy finish—perfect for dogs and burgers alike. After polishing off two cheeseburgers and a large birch beer, I grabbed a jar of relish to go, ensuring the tradition continues at home.

The restaurant now operates two locations in town: Original Location: 189 Highland Ave (Maplecroft/Stop & Shop Plaza).

- Blender bar has easily become one of our favorite spots for a girls lunch date! Both locations are amazing- the staff so always so friendly and helpful in trying to decide what to try next!! From the food- to the drinks to the açaí bowls and the Nutella balls— everything is top notch!

IL GUSTO RESTAURANT & WINE BAR
A New Legacy at the Historic Waverly: Il Gusto
If you’ve lived in Cheshire as long as I have, the address 286 Maple Avenue carries a certain weight. It’s the site of the historic Waverly Inn, a landmark that has seen decades of town history pass through its doors.
The Scene & The Setup
The transition from the old Waverly to Il Gusto has breathed new life into the space. It strikes that delicate balance: classy without being pretentious. The atmosphere is upbeat and lively, centered around a large, well-designed bar area featuring plenty of high-tops.
Pro Tip: If you’re looking for a romantic evening, ask for a quiet table when booking. If you’re here for the energy, the bar is the place to be.
The Bar Crew: Keep an eye out for bartenders like Guy and Alex; they’ve earned a reputation for precision, particularly with their espresso martinis.
Logistics: Reservations are highly recommended. While there is a large banquet room for celebrations, parking can get a bit "New England tight" during peak dinner rushes.
The Main Event: The Menu
The menu is a love letter to fresh ingredients and "huge portions" (bring your appetite or a sturdy take-home bag). Much like its New Haven predecessor, the meal kicks off with complimentary bread accompanied by peppers and olives in a sharp vinaigrette—a small detail that sets a high bar.
The Showstopper: The Cheese Wheel The signature move here is the Parmigiano cheese-wheel pasta. It is prepared tableside, a bit of culinary theater that Eleanor and Arthur would surely appreciate. You can choose from 10 different homemade pasta types, including a standout Cacio e Pepe.
Other Notable Bites:
Appetizers: The Panna Cotta (savory version) and the Cold Seafood Salad are fresh and vibrant.
Entrees: The Stuffed Veal Breast is a masterclass in traditional technique, while the Scallops wrapped in bacon and the Pork Chops offer hearty, expertly plated alternatives to pasta.
Il Gusto is a sophisticated addition to Cheshire’s dining landscape. It honors the history of the Waverly site while providing a level of Italian cuisine that used to require a trip to the Elm City. Whether you're celebrating a milestone birthday or just looking for a midweek escape, it’s a welcome new chapter for Maple Avenue.
Vespucci's Restaurant
A West Main Street Mainstay: Vespucci’s Italian Restaurant
If you are looking for the definition of "consistent" in Cheshire, look no further than 150 Main Street. Vespucci’s has carved out a reputation as a local powerhouse, balancing a massive menu with the kind of value that makes you wonder if they realized they gave you two meals for the price of one. It’s the kind of place where the leftovers are almost as celebrated as the initial sit-down dinner.
The Atmosphere & Service
The vibe here is classic and welcoming—clean, presentable, and reliable. It’s a favorite for family gatherings (perfect for taking your favorite aunt or celebrating a birthday) because the waitstaff is known for being attentive and friendly without being overbearing. Despite the "huge" menu, the kitchen runs like a well-oiled machine; diners often remark on how quickly the food arrives, even when the dining room is bustling.
Culinary Highlights
The kitchen at Vespucci’s takes food preparation seriously, and it shows in the details that often get overlooked elsewhere.
The Bread Service: Every meal starts on a high note with warm, crusty bread served with a signature dipping sauce of olive oil, garlic, and green peppers.
The Greens: You won’t find a sad bowl of iceberg here. The house salad is a vibrant mix of field greens, red cabbage, black olives, and carrots, tossed in a highly-praised house dressing.
Chicken Specialties: Whether it’s the Chicken Francese or the Chicken Limone, the chicken is served in light, seasoned egg batter.
Insider Tip: Ask for fresh-squeezed lemon for your Francese; the kitchen is happy to oblige for that extra zing.
The Scarpariello: A recent standout is the Chicken Scarpariello, featuring fresh mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, garlic, and hot peppers in a rich Marsala sauce. It offers a perfect "zing" without being overwhelming.
Seafood Favorites: Their Lobster Ravioli and Seafood Alfredo are consistent crowd-pleasers for those looking for something a bit more indulgent.
Why It Works
Vespucci’s wins on the "little things." The mashed potatoes are famously creamy and flavorful, and importantly for many diners, the chefs don't over-salt the dishes, letting the fresh ingredients speak for themselves.
Even their Pizza holds its own in a state known for its pies—expect a great crust and sauce that isn't overcooked or charred. With most entrees landing in the $20–$30 range, it remains one of the best "bang-for-your-buck" spots in the 06410 zip code.
The Verdict: Whether you’re a local who has lived here since the 60s or someone driving 30 miles to get your fix, Vespucci’s delivers a "fantastic food" experience that honors the tradition of hearty, well-made Italian-American cuisine.
